Do Mining Rigs Give Off Heat?

There is the still the presumption that Cryptocurrency mining is very heat intensive and that’s why people have to run them in cold places like Iceland and Russia. That is true for Bitcoin mining which is very different to the type of mining which our GPU mining rigs do.

Those Bitcoin mining machines are single use machines which are designed to just mine one coin and to do this they use a very high wattage, which consequently creates the intense heat omission.

Whereas with our machines you can change the electrical consumption of the mining rigs and ultimately this will change the heat omission from the machine. Ultimately our mining rigs are comprised of traditional computer components, so they are designed to work at manageable temperatures.

Typically one of our 6 card GPU mining rigs will use around 1000 Watts every hour, which means they use less than a standard kettle when it’s on. So they don’t use that much electric at all in comparison to what people think about Cryptocurrency mining. As a rule of thumb we have calculated our mining rigs to be omit around 40% of their electrical consumption in heat, so for the 1000 Watts consumption, the machine would omit around 400 Watts of thermal energy.

For one machine it’s very similar to having a small 400W oil heater running, so it can easily keep one room warm. For our large scale orders there would need to be some consideration for air circulation, but we’ve often found that a couple of floor fans are enough to circulate the air around rooms which need cooling. Air conditioning isn’t necessary for running your own mining rigs.

On the other hand, for large scale, or even just a few units, the heat by-product can be used in very advantageous ways. We have clients who use the mining rigs to heat their homes and save on the heating bills. Also with large scale installs, the heat can be used to heat premises or incorporated into some form of heating system. There are a lot of commercial use cases for this, such as; hotels, leisure centres, out buildings and commercial premises.

So ultimately, heat isn’t really a concern until you have a lot of mining rigs in a small physical space. As long as there is plug sockets and internet you can put them in spare rooms, garages, sheds or out buildings as long as it’s dry and relatively dust free.

The extreme heat omission is just another presumption that people have had because they have looked at Bitcoin mining and not the more flexible GPU mining which is what we do.
